Detention Center Release Paths
Greene County Detention Center is the county jail in Snow Hill. A person can leave after posting bond, meeting pretrial conditions, a court order, dismissal when no other hold remains, time served, or sentence expiration. Those outcomes may put the person back in the community. Yet the same jail record may use a departure or movement entry when another county, NCDAC, a medical placement, federal authorities, or immigration authorities take custody. No official web roster, current-inmate search, or recent-release list was found on the Greene County jail site. That makes a two-part check essential: ask the jail about present custody, then obtain the existing record for the completed booking episode. Use a full legal name and date of birth. Add the booking number and an approximate booking or release date when known, since a name alone can point to the wrong person.

- If not, ask whether the departure was community release or transfer, and request the date, time, booking number, and receiving agency if staff can provide them.

Physical confinement in Snow Hill does not prove that Greene County was the committing county. Because the jail participates in the misdemeanor confinement program and rents beds to neighboring counties, ask which agency authorized the release as well as which agency made the booking. If the movement record names another county, that county’s court file may supply the controlling order. This detail prevents a request from being routed only by the building address.

Greene County’s custody map is unusually dense. Three NCDAC prisons sit near Maury and Hookerton, but their prisoners are held by the state, not by the county jail. Greene Correctional Institution is a minimum-custody reentry site. Eastern Correctional Institution is close custody. Maury Correctional Institution holds close and medium custody populations and has specialized units. A jail commitment to NCDAC can therefore lead to a nearby prison while custody continues.
Use the NCDAC offender search when the jail movement entry identifies a state commitment. Read current and previous location, last movement date, top-level inmate status, sentence status, and Actual Release Date together. A new state location is a transfer. An Actual Release Date paired with active post-release status means prison custody ended, but community supervision continues. This facility-specific contrast is critical because a search for “Greene County inmate” often mixes Snow Hill jail records with statewide prison records.
Note: A prison located inside Greene County does not turn its statewide NCDAC release into a Greene County jail release.

The same is true of release-processing hours. Do not infer them from courthouse or county-office hours. A planned ride should wait for direct confirmation because transfers, holds, court action, and processing can change the expected departure.
