Eastern CI Release or Transfer
Eastern Correctional Institution holds men in close custody under the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction. Leaving its grounds does not always end imprisonment. A person may move to Greene Correctional Institution as release approaches, transfer to Maury Correctional Institution or another state prison, enter a hospital, leave prison under post-release supervision, or complete the NCDAC episode. Each route creates a different record pattern.
A transfer usually changes Current Location, moves Eastern into Previous Location, and supplies a Last Movement Date while Inmate Status remains active. Community release should be tied to an Actual Release Date for the right sentence period. Active Probation/Parole/Post Release Status can then show continuing state authority outside prison. Final discharge requires stronger support across inactive statuses and an expired sentence period. Even that conclusion is limited to NCDAC and does not rule out another custodian.
Search Eastern CI Release Records
Use the official NCDAC Offender Public Information search. Search by offender number when available. Otherwise, enter the name and compare birth date or age, sex, race, and record details before selecting a person. Similar names are not enough. Choose All when status is uncertain, Active Inmate for present state custody, Active Probationer/Parolee for release followed by supervision, or Inactive for historical state records.
- Verify the person and offender number on the result page.
- Read both the top-level inmate and community-supervision statuses.
- Locate the incarceration period associated with Eastern CI.
- Compare Projected Release Date with Actual Release Date and Service Status.
- Trace Current Location, Previous Location, and Last Movement Date.
- Review any later incarceration or supervision period before reporting the outcome.
The monthly Inmate Release Search is a second state route. It requires county, year, and month and returns offender number, name, release date, primary offense, and release type. Selecting Greene refers to NCDAC’s reported release county, not necessarily the prison from which a person physically departed. Do not use it as a county-jail roster or as a complete list of Eastern departures.
That geography distinction is crucial for Eastern. A person can physically leave the Maury facility while NCDAC records a different release county based on the release destination or state reporting rules. The form also includes choices for an unreported release county and releases to other states. Search those paths when the person-specific record supports release but the Greene monthly cohort does not show the name. Then open the detailed person page, because the monthly row cannot show whether a later state custody period began.
Note: NCDAC’s public database reaches back to 1972, but older records may not contain every modern field.
Eastern CI Date Checks
Several dates can appear close together while answering separate questions. Sentence Begin Date starts a sentence computation and may reflect credited confinement. Projected Release Date is the current calculation. Actual Release Date records a completed event for that sentence period. Parole or supervision begin and end dates describe community authority. Last Movement Date can be no more than the date of a prison transfer.
| Record combination | Supported conclusion |
|---|---|
| Active inmate plus new current prison | Transfer within NCDAC, not community release. |
| Actual release plus active post-release status | Outside prison under continuing community supervision. |
| Projected date only plus active inmate | No confirmed release has occurred. |
| Expired sentence plus both inactive statuses | Historical NCDAC episode appears complete. |
| Old actual date plus later active period | Earlier release was followed by later custody. |
Always identify the sentence number and the event being checked. OPI can show multiple commitments, revocations, and releases. Reporting only the newest date may answer the wrong question, while reporting an old date without the present status may falsely imply that the person remains free.
Service Status applies to one sentence line. “Expired” on an older line can coexist with a newer active term elsewhere in the record. Parole Begin Date or a post-release start date marks community authority, while a supervision end date is not automatically the physical prison-release date. If only Projected Release Date appears and the inmate status remains active, no completed release has been confirmed. These distinctions matter more at Eastern because a move toward another Greene County institution can occur before the sentence reaches its final community phase.
Eastern CI Contact and Records
Facility staff can address operational questions, while the statewide record belongs to NCDAC. If OPI is unclear, save the person-record URL, offender number, and sentence number. Request basic public information confirming admission, sentence length, time served, actual release date, public release type, and supervision start or end. Exclude confidential medical, behavior, classification, security, and internal case-management records.

NCDAC public-record route
The Greene County Sheriff does not control Eastern CI release dates. Sheriff Matt Sasser’s office handles county-jail records, while NCDAC holds Eastern’s prison record. Contacting the Snow Hill detention center for a state-prison record sends the question to the wrong custodian. The county-focused search on the Greene County released inmates page helps separate jail, prison, federal, and immigration systems when the original custodian is uncertain.
Eastern CI Close-Custody History
The official Eastern Correctional Institution profile identifies the Maury site as a male close-custody prison. It also records a facility-specific mission change: Eastern returned from a women’s mission to a male close-custody mission in winter 2019. This history helps identify the correct institution and period when reviewing an older record.
The official Eastern CI page shown below is the source for its mission and contact details. It is not a person-specific locator, and the image cannot establish anyone’s custody or release status.
The source confirms which Eastern facility is meant, an important safeguard when a historic offender record spans the mission change or several NCDAC locations.
Greene County Prison Movement
Greene County contains three NCDAC institutions with very different functions. Greene CI is minimum custody and has a formal reentry role. Eastern is close custody. Maury houses close and medium custody populations with specialized units. Their proximity makes local search results look connected, yet movement among them stays within the same statewide prison system.
This is the distinctive Greene County facility problem. A person can leave Eastern and appear at Greene CI, perhaps nearer a release phase, without having been released. Another person can move to Maury for custody, treatment, or program reasons. OPI location fields supply the trail, while sentence and status panels explain whether custody actually ended. The name of the new facility matters more than a mere disappearance from Eastern.
Note: A move among the three Greene County prisons is still NCDAC custody unless the sentence and status fields show otherwise.
After an Eastern CI Release
If the record shows an Actual Release Date and active post-release supervision, the person is in the community under NCDAC authority. Post-release supervision is the mandatory community phase for covered sentences. Parole is discretionary conditional release for eligible older-law and other covered cases. Probation is court-ordered community supervision and need not follow a prison term. Read the precise label rather than treating them as synonyms.
A court record can add the legal context, while the NCDAC record supplies the prison event. For a recent state cohort, the monthly release search can corroborate the date and type. When exact proof matters, request the public basic record from NCDAC. NC SAVAN through VINELink may provide alerts and a reporting-agency status, but it should be checked against OPI. A VINE “released” result can describe release from one agency followed by custody in another.
A useful NCDAC request names the offender number, OPI URL, and sentence period, then asks for admission, sentence length, time served, actual release, public release type, and the start or end of supervision. The request should expressly exclude confidential institutional behavior, classification, medical, security, and case-management material. This narrow scope tracks NCDAC’s stated line between public basic data and internal prison files. If an official field is wrong, identify that exact field and attach the judgment, release entry, or other government record that supports correction.
