Greene CI Release Outcomes
Greene Correctional Institution is a state prison, not the county detention center. NCDAC can release a person from prison to the community, often under post-release supervision, or move that person to another state facility. An inmate may also take part in authorized work release or home and community leave while still serving the sentence. None of those temporary or program-based movements should be reported as full discharge.
A completed prison event is best shown by an Actual Release Date tied to the right sentence period. Top-level Inmate Status then shows whether prison custody remains active. Probation/Parole/Post Release Status shows whether community authority continues. If the current location changes from Greene CI to Eastern, Maury, or another NCDAC site, the event is a transfer. If inmate status becomes inactive while supervision is active, the person is physically out of prison but not fully discharged from NCDAC.
Confirm a Greene CI Release
Begin with NCDAC Offender Public Information. An offender number is the strongest search key because it follows the state record. When it is unknown, search a full name and compare birth date or age and other identifiers. Choose All if status is unclear, Active Probationer/Parolee when prison release may have led to supervision, or Inactive for a fully historical NCDAC episode.
- Open the matching person record and verify identity before reading custody data.
- Compare Inmate Status with Probation/Parole/Post Release Status.
- Find the sentence period associated with Greene CI and read Service Status, sentence begin date, Projected Release Date, and Actual Release Date.
- Review Current Location, Previous Location, and Last Movement Date for a transfer.
- Check supervision begin and end dates when community supervision follows.
- Request basic release data from NCDAC if the public record remains unclear.
The separate monthly Inmate Release Search is useful for a recent state release cohort. Its Greene filter means the release county reported in the NCDAC database. Open a monthly result to reach the person page rather than stopping at the cohort row. The list supplies offender number, name, release date, primary offense, and type of release, but the detailed record is where active supervision and later custody appear. The form also offers “Release County Not Reported” and “Released To Other State(s).” A real Greene CI release may therefore be absent from a Greene-filtered month if NCDAC recorded the geography another way. Absence from that list is not proof that the prison event did not occur.
Note: A Projected Release Date estimates a future sentence event; only an Actual Release Date records that the event occurred.
Greene CI Record Fields
OPI can preserve several prison and supervision periods on one person page. Always match the sentence period to the facility stay and event in question. A prior Actual Release Date can remain historically correct even after a new admission. Likewise, an expired sentence line does not by itself prove that every later sentence or supervision term ended.

NCDAC says its database contains prison, probation, and parole history back to 1972, while excluding ordinary county jail records. Basic conviction, sentence length, time served, admission, and release-date information is generally public. Internal behavior, classification, security, medical, and case-management material may be confidential. A focused request for basic date and sentence fields is more useful than a demand for an institutional file.

When the portal does not settle the issue, save the offender number, record URL, and relevant sentence number. Ask NCDAC for the public basic record confirming admission, sentence term, time served, actual release date, public release type, and supervision dates. A call to Greene County Detention Center cannot confirm a state-prison release. Sheriff Matt Sasser’s office handles county-jail records, while NCDAC holds the Greene CI prison record. The shared county name is geographic only. For a disputed date, provide the exact field, offender and sentence identifiers, the claimed correction, and a supporting judgment or official order. Ask the state record custodian to correct its source record rather than relying on a search-engine result.
Greene CI Reentry Mission
The official Greene Correctional Institution profile describes a minimum-custody prison for men and identifies it as a designated reentry facility. Listed services include Strive Transition, work release, home and community volunteer leaves, cognitive intervention, independent studies, substance-support groups, and religious programs. These facts make Greene CI a distinct release-preparation site for people from across North Carolina, not just Greene County residents.

Greene County Prison Differences
Three state prisons sit close together in Greene County, and each has a sharply different mission. Greene CI is minimum custody and reentry-focused. Eastern Correctional Institution is a male close-custody prison. Maury Correctional Institution holds men in close and medium custody and contains specialized custody units. A person who disappears from Greene CI may therefore have moved to a nearby higher-custody setting, another NCDAC site, or a program, not left state authority.
Read the location trail in sequence. Previous Location identifies where the person came from, Current Location identifies the present NCDAC placement, and Last Movement Date dates that change. Then inspect the sentence and supervision panels. This facility-history angle prevents a common local error: treating any movement among Greene County institutions as a county release. The custodian stays NCDAC throughout an ordinary prison transfer.

After Greene CI Release
Community release can lead to probation, parole, or post-release supervision, and those labels are not interchangeable. Probation is court-ordered community supervision and may exist without a prison release. Parole is conditional early release for eligible older-law or other covered cases. Post-release supervision is the community phase that follows prison for covered current-law sentences. OPI’s active supervision field identifies the state status that follows the Actual Release Date.
A released person can thus be outside prison while still subject to NCDAC authority. Check the live status rather than relying only on an old projected end date. Revocation or a new commitment can create a later custody period. If all displayed inmate and supervision statuses are inactive and the relevant sentence is expired with an Actual Release Date, the record more strongly supports completion of that displayed NCDAC episode. It still does not rule out custody by another state, county, federal agency, or immigration authority.
When dates conflict, request a narrow confirmation package from NCDAC. Give the offender number and sentence number, then ask for admission date, term, time served, actual prison release date, public release type, and supervision dates. This asks for the basic record NCDAC identifies as public while avoiding internal classification or behavior files. Keep the response with the OPI record so a later status change does not erase the historical basis for the reported event.
